Curriculum Intent Statement
Intent
At Dilton Marsh we belive that Computing is an essential part of the curriculum; a subject that not only stands alone but is an integral part of all learning. Computing, in general, is a significant part of everyone’s daily life and children should be at the forefront of understanding new technologies; how to use them and how adapt them for their own needs. Computing within our school will therefore provide a wealth of learning opportunities and transferrable skills across the curriculum and their daily lives.
Implementation
Our Units are split into 6 distinct areas, in line with the national curriculum:
- Term 1: Coding (a focus on coding to create games/animations)
- Term 2: Connecting (a focus online safety and the key features of the internet)
- Term 3: Creating (a focus on content creation, such as pictures, videos, presentations)
- Term 4: Collecting (a focus on data handling in different contexts)
- Term 5: Communicating (a focus on digital literacy and how to effectively use technology)
- Term 6: Combining (a focus on bringing these skills together through a project)
Each unit builds upon the previous year’s unit. All children will be working on the same unit each term so that progression throughout the years can clearly be shown. Every unit will start with a lesson of Online Safety in line with KCSiE - This will ensure that our children are confident with how they can stay safe when using technology.
Impact
Finding the right balance with technology is key to an effective education and a healthy life-style. We feel the way we implement computing helps children realise the need for the right balance and one they can continue to build on in their next stage of education and beyond. We encourage regular discussions between staff and pupils to best embed and understand this. The way pupils showcase, share, celebrate and publish their work will best show the impact of our curriculum. We also look for evidence through reviewing pupil’s knowledge and skills digitally through evidence on our servers, Kahoot quizzes and observing learning.
